ANSTO's Melbourne location is home to the ANSTO-owned and operated Australian Synchrotron. The Synchrotron is one of the Australia's most significant pieces of scientific infrastructure.


ANSTO’s Clayton campus is located 22 km south-east of Melbourne CBD.

Getting to the Australian Synchrotron by car is easy and there is plenty of free onsite parking for all visitors.

Public transport

  • The following buses stop at a bus stop on Blackburn Rd near the Australian Synchrotron: 703, 737.

  • The following buses stop at the Monash University bus loop: 630, 631, 691, 703, 733, 737, 802/804/862. From there, visitors can exit Monash University on the Wellington Rd side (nearest the bus loop), walk down Wellington Rd alongside the University and cross Blackburn Rd at the traffic intersection to reach the Australian Synchrotron.

  • The nearest train stations are Huntingdale and Clayton stations which are on the Cranbourne/Pakenham line, and Syndal station which is on the Glen Waverley line. Connecting buses can be caught from any of these train stations.

The Kitchen Synch Cafe is located on the ground floor of the National Centre for Synchrotron Science.

The cafe is open weekdays from 8:00 am until 2:00pm and offers a wide range of breakfast, lunch items and main meals. The cafe also provides take-away dinner options
